Testing Tidal Technologies
Holyhead Deep is a tidal stream energy project located about 8km off the coast of Holyhead in Anglesey. At present, there is just a demonstrator 0.5MW generator installed, but Minesto plans to scale this up to 80MW over the next few years. Eventually, it hopes to be able to roll out the technology to a much larger area of the sea off North Wales. Tidal Stream Generators (also called Tidal Energy Converters) are simple machines that extract energy from the movement of water with the tides. Converting to greener forms of energy such as tidal energy is essential in preventing long-term, harmful effects on our planet. While we are capable of running out of fossil fuels which currently power a lot of our industry, green-energy can be used again and again, with no adverse effects on the planet.
